The world’s second-tallest wooden church

The Ascension Cathedral is a working Orthodox cathedral built almost entirely of wood. It is considered the second-tallest wooden church in the world after the church of Săpânța-Peri Monastery in Romania (78 m), and UNESCO materials call it one of the tallest timber buildings on the planet.

  • Built in 1904–1907 to a design by Konstantin Borisoglebsky, with engineer Andrei Zenkov
  • Height: 54–56 m (according to Kazakhstan’s official tourism portal)
